Data sources mapped.
The first step for the ASDN project was to identify the current and potential sources and custodians for on-farm fatality and injury data in Australia. The quality and accessibility of 21 data sources was assessed, and the opportunities, gaps and relationships that would be required to utilise each data source were described. This assessment used the data quality profile system developed by CSIRO for the Australian Agricultural Sustainability Framework.
The aim was to identify where there was immediate access to the highest quality injury data (now incorporated in the metrics calculated), and where there were potential opportunities to further enhance the quality and breadth of injury data (now being pursued with a range of stakeholders including state work safe authorities and the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare).
This data mapping will be regularly revised.
Injury coding revised
The coding schema for recording details of incidents leading to serious injury or fatality was updated. Coding includes details of demographics, role in event (e.g. operator, bystander, passenger), work relatedness, relevant causal agents of injury (dams, tractors, grain augers, quads etc.), mechanism of injury, toxicological results (alcohol/drugs) and other context specific information as applicable such as helmet usage, loads and rollover/runover.
ASDN Farm Injury Coding Framework v2.5
From this work new opportunities emerged, for example for Australian agriculture to contribute to the revision of the International Classification of Diseases.
Fatality and Injury metrics defined
With input from a Technical Working Group and a Stakeholder Reference Group, agreed methods of analysing and reporting 18 fatality and 20 injury metrics were established. This provides the strong foundation for continuity of reporting – leading to better tracking and stronger understanding of changes in safety performance over time.
